Legendary Rivalry
The Velamas are considered traditional enemies of Reddys. Both the groups got along fine as feudatories of the Kakatiyas but to gain prominence in the royal court the professional rivalry went to the extremes:
The Padmanayakas were favorites of the King. Commander Bobba/Bhoji Reddy decided to show the King who exactly were the valorous fighters. He decided to wait till the Velama contingent got mauled by the Muslim army and then jump in to save the Velamas as well as the King. Unfortunately his timing was not good and both got beaten leading to the downfall of Kakatiya empire. Ever since, the Velamas blamed the Reddys for the historical blunder and continuously waged battles against Reddy kings. Later they managed to found independent states of Rajakonda and Devarakonda.
On the other hand, Reddys accuse the Velamas of colluding with alien Bahamanis to keep their state intact and indulge in attacking the Reddy kingdoms at every given opportunity. The Velamas say if not for Reddy cleverness and opportunistic attitude during the battle with Delhi Sultan's army, Kakatiya empire would have been intact at least till the British colonial period.
After the defeat of Prataparudra, Andhra Pradesh and Hindu religion succumbed to bad times. Annaya Mantri and Kolanu Rudradeva tried to unify the remaining Nayaka Chieftains belonging to various communities such as Velama, Reddy, Kamma, Balija and Telaga communities and appointed a Chief, Musunuri Prolaya Nayaka as the leader. The Nayaka confederation rebelled and recaptured Warangal. Prolaneedu was succeeded by his cousin Kaapaanedu which was resented by the Velama Nayakas. They again sought the help of the Bahmani sultan and killed Kaapaya Nayaka. Thus ended the unity of Telugu land.
The Velamas subsequently fought the Reddy Kingdom and Vijayanagar Empire on behalf of Bahmanis. Ultimately, Krishnadevaraya vanquished all and unified Andhra Pradesh. Velamas had to join the imperial service of Vijayanagar as military contingents and regional governors. Many Velamas thus settled in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere.
Origin theories
There are four conflicting theories as to the origin of the community.
Many believe Velamas migrated from Bihar when they were banished by Chanakya for supporting the Nanda dynasty.
Some linguists trace the root of the word Velama to similar sounding Vellalars of Tamil Nadu and assume they are Vellala soldiers and administrators who followed in the footsteps of the Chola expansion to Andhra. The Andhra branch known as Velanati or Velanadu (Tamil/Telugu) Cholas who are also known as Telugu Cholas could have been instrumental in the genesis of the Velama community in Andhra
It is believed that Velamas belong to one of the Original Aryan races of north India who migrated to south India during Chanakya times.
But it is also possible that Velama and Vellala are derived from lance wielders where Vel in Tamil stands for a lance. Hence, they could be an indigenous group directly derived from a Neolithic agrarian community.
It is possible that they were simply lance wielding soldiers of one of the many local Kingdoms such as Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas or Cholas who came to dominate the land through their service to the kings
It is also believed that Velamas came from Bengal area. Even today, Velama brides wear saris in the Bengali style. During the wedding the Velama concept of having a mango twig over the heads of the bride and groom is also unique to the Bengali culture. It is believed that a ship load of people from Bengal got shipwrecked in the Bay of Bengal and two groups of survivors managed to reach two points on the Coromandel Coast. The first one was headed by a person called Adiraju and therefore came to be called Adi Velamas and the second group was headed by Padmaraju and therefore called Padma Velamas. Also, these new people were good at counting and arithmatic and attracted local landlords and kings to hire them as accountants.
The History of Padmanayaka Velamas only is known through various ancient scriptures and ballads.
The Padmanayaka Velamas seem to be a different caste altogether based on their physical features and war-like build besides the customs and traditions pointing towards a warrior origin.
Feudal past
The history of Velamas is as old as Telugu bravery. Their military exploits form an important part of Telugu tradition, history and folklore. The battle of Palnadu, Balanagamma Charitra, Confilct at Bobbili etc speak volumes about their chivalry. They are known to be fearless and battle hardy warriors. However, their role in protection of the unity of Telugu land and Hindu dharma at crucial times was suspect. Killing of Kaapaya Nayaka who valiantly opposed marauding Muslims; waging incessant battles with Reddy Nayaks at a time when Telugu people were craving for saviors and later aligning with Bahmanis in their battles with fledgling Vijayanagar empire did not behoove well of them. Their heroic traditions such as 'Sati' prove that they are of Aryan descent with extensive inter mingling with other martial races of India. Velamas are well known for their liberal outlook which is obvious from the war of Palnadu. Velama kings regularly clashed with the Reddys but had friendly dealings with the Orissa Gajapatis and the Bahmanis. Because of their proximity to the Bahmanis, they had to wage battles with Vijayanagar empire and eventually suffered a setback. Residual influence of Velamas is noticeable in Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Adilabad, Nalgonda, Khammam, Mahbubnagar,Pithapuram and Prakasam Dist also.

Introduction to origin and importance of family names and / or gothra.

The Telugu family names in Andhra Pradesh are said to have originated around 1250 AD onwards until they took the final shape somewhere around early 1400 AD. They were said to have come into existance along the lines of names of villages where the family lived around that time, examples are those family names which ended in 'palli' and some other village names ( few examples in our community ), or styled after a prominent person, like a warrior or some other forefather in the family, such names are said to have ended in 'neni' ( many examples in our case ), or some other significant event or unknown criteria specific to that family or circumstances. ( Reference: Talbot, Cynthia, 2004 )

Before 1250 AD, Velama clans probably must have been identified only through gothra as there were no family names existing around that time ( that is why we have only Recherla Brahma Naidu and Recherla Prasadithya etc who were identified only through their gothra ). Obviously gothra were older than family names and a particular gothra represents the genetic heritage of that clan as a whole (each such clan later might have split into various family names but all the descendants are of same genetic heritage or gothra ).

The family names and gothra are significant as you already know at least for marriage purposes as we Velama's like many other communities do not marry into the Velama's of the same family name as well as same gothra as those Velama's are considered to be genetically closer compared to the Velamas with a totally different family name and gothra. Since ages Hindus are known to have married always into different clans with the hope that such a marriage will lead to production of better off springs with no genetic disorders and Velama's are no exception to this general rule. For example, Rajputs in North India, who are numerically large in number and spread across several Indian states, are known to scan and marry into an entirely different clan of which they are not related for past fourteen generations.

It is also a proven fact scientifically from genetics perspective as to why it is ideal for one to marry into a different genetic pool. Incidence of genetic and hereditary disorders are known to be very high among the children born from marriages between closer genetic pools. Ancient Hindus, thousands of years back are known to have married initially Swa-gothra ( same gothra ) for some time and later on at some point of time switched to marriages into an entirely different gothra going by their previous bad experiences. In this context, it is interesting to note that Kashmir Pandits, who are Brahmins and are numerically small in number, are said to marry even today Swa-gothra. Similar problem also exists today among Parsis of India who are Zoriashtrians by religion and have immigrated from Iran in small numbers.

Velama sub divisions

All the divisions are based on their original living location. Major divisions in Andhra Pradesh are

* Adi Velama
* Koppula Velama
* Padma Velama
* Polinati Velama

Adi Velamas are seen in Machilipatnam,Rajamundry,Hyderabad etc..,

Polinati Velamas are seen in Srikakulam and other coastal Andhra districts. Most Polinati Velamas have Naidu as middle name i.e. suffix in their names and their primary occupation is farming. They play dominant role in Srikakulam district politics and backbone of this district's economy.

Koppula Velamas are living in Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and other coastal Andhra districts. Most Koppula Velamas have Naidu as middle name i.e. suffix in their names and their primary occupation is farming. They play key role in Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam district politics and vital to these district's economy.

Padma velamas are also called as padmanayaka velamas. They are mostly seen in Telangana districts like Karimnagar, Warangal, Adilabad, Nizambad, Rangareddy, Medak, Mehboobnagar and Hyderabad. They are also prominently seen in places like Addanki(Ongole),Vijayawada,Kakinada, Nuzvid, and the villages surrounding these places. Politically, socially and economically, they played a prominant role in the growth of Andhra Pradesh.

As this Empire expanded some of the Nayaks were sent to far away lands in southern Tamil Nadu like Madurai, Tanjavore, and Arkot districts of Northern Tamil Nadu to control those territories and collect and send revenue to the King at Hampi, the Capital of Vijayanagara Empire. Thus various Padma Nayaka Velamas have settled in the villages of those newly aquired territories and today they are referred to as Velama Naidus or simply Padma Velamas. For no reason there are about forty such Velama Naidu villages in and around Madurai town alone for even today. They hold huge tracts of land in Tamil Nadu and most of them were big Zamindars. You did nothing great but collect everything available and cut paste. The problem is we loose the plot. Especially linking us to other sects with the velama word in their caste name.

The origin of VELAMA is not known but the closest approximate is VELI =outside MALA= mountain. Meaning one of the castes which came from outside the Vindhya Mountains.

Padma is an ancient name for PATNA in sanskrit. Mmm...interesting.

Padma = patna, nayakas - rulers/ chieftains.

If you observe anthropologically padmanayaka velamaas of royal roots especially the Andhra Rajas and Jamindars have very finely defined features along with a war like build.

Koppu velamas are shepherds with Koppus or knotted hair who migrated from up above.

Adivelamas are also known as GUNA CHAKALIS ; they migrated from western India esp Bengal and their KULA VRUTTI was Kalamkari and other weaving crafts.

A lot of surviving traditions of padmanayaka velamas also suggest war like profession along with the history suggesting the same.

Do you know that Padmanayaka velama females are the only ones like the Rajput females who wear extensive GOLD on their feet? (called APARANJI)
Ask any oter caste females from Andhra to wear gold on their feet..they refuse.

We are so disticnt from others ....And also many of the people mentioned on your blog are not from our caste .....

This is simply supurb. It will be benificial if we try to add things more, with respect to time.
All subdivisions of velamas should have unity. That will be very much beneficial in near future.
I hope we will get uniformity in near future.

Hi Ravinder Rao,

Good Job, as i and we velmas appreciate it. Regarding every ones comments should pretend and make us together and we are not divided by regions as we are one. Like we may be from North or south and if state wise AP or TN or any place and in AP we may division Telangana or Andhra as we may be settlers in any new places but onething we belong to one and we are Kings..

Anyways i hope we need to get ready especially youth icons should come up shortly to overtake or to be added in list.

Come on one guys & girls.. We need be Tycoons.. So fix them and struggle, fight and achieve your goals.

Victory Velamas ...

At last Ravi, can you please include my Sur Name,

By JINNA ORDERED MILLIONS OF HINDUS TO BE RAPED AND KILLED IN PAKISTAN on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 06:13 am

Prominent world leaders & U.N frequently talks & condemn about Jews' holocaust
by Nazis during world war II. Jews were looted, raped & butchered without
any mercy. It all happened in different countries of the world as they were
not having their own land. After Holocaust, the survivors cried throughout the
world & in U.N. to get justice..... without crying nobody get justice! They
are even going to get back their looted property from the swiss banks being
deposited by Nazis.....Why they get justice so fast? - because their folks have unity!
Now what about Hindus' holocaust under Muslim invaders & rulers in their own
motherland ??
Just before partition the Hindu population of Pakistan was about 26%. Today, there are no Hindus in Pakistan. Today, Hindus account 0.0(absolutely zero) percent of Pakistan population. What happened to all Hindus in Pakistan? Did they all moved to India in 1947......................? NO!
During 1946 and before that Muslims killed lakhs of Hindus to get thier separate homeland Pakistan. (read Hindu Killing on Direct Action Day called by Muslim Legue).
As soon as Muslim got thier land the systamatic athenic cleansing of Hindus began.
About 10 million Hindus were killed in 1947 by Muslims with help of thier army. Trains were sent to India full of innocent Hindus and Sikh butchered. Thousands of Hindu and Sikh were forcefully converted to Islam. So many Hindus and Sikhs women raped and Children cut in half. (for Reference see: Freedom at Midnight by Dominique Lepiere).
In 1972, during the Bangladesh war Pakistani army killed 3 million Hindus, raped their women and destoryed their property in Bangladesh. Some Hindus fled to India only to be pushed back to Bangladesh by then Congress government ruled by Indira Gandhi.
Even today, thousands of Hindus have been killed and driven out of Kashmir, a muslim majority area of India. If Hindus are killed in the land like Kashmir which is ruled by India then one can imagine what must have happaned to those Hindus left behind in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Nobody talks about it.....even the Hindus & their congress
leaders never talked a word about it! So that they can get Muslim vote in India. What a pity & shame on us & our leaders?
Nobody got the courage to bring to light for the world to see what has been
done to Hindus & their culture in their own homeland by the Muslim invaders
& rulers? Untill & unless Hindus get united & cry to seek justice - they
wouldn't get it. If our leaders in the name of secularism, don't want to set
the things right for the majority Hindus.......get rid of them & take the
matter in your own hands & fight for your cause. Try to educate other hindus
of all castes/color to fight if they want to keep their culture alive &
survive in their own country.....our current leaders are going in the
opposite direction for the sake of votes.

Few of the brutalities/atrocities penetrated on Hindus during Muslim rule:

* Unaccounted Hindus were butchered/murdered or coverted to Islam in their
own country during Muslim invasion & their rule for centuries .

* Unaccounted Hindu women/girls either raped or converted to Islam under force.

* Unaccounted Hindu children butchered.

* Thousands upon thousands temples (big & small) first looted and then erazed
& mosques (masjids) built....Sri Ram temple is one of them......

* Unaccounted wealth & jewels/jewelary looted from old famous temples &
elsewhere and sent to persia or other countries from where they came .

* Hindus culture distroyed & knowledge books etc.burnt....

*Name of Hindu holy cities changed to Islamic name eg. Prayag was changed to
Allahabad (city of Allah) to destory the Hinduism from India. The Benaras city was
named Islamabad during muslim rule.

Why all this happened? Because of infighing between Hindus & their Hindu
kings/rulers, India never attacked or invaded any country neither in the
past nor now. Rather it was invaded & looted and ruled by alien countries -
first by Muslims & then by British. Everytime reason was the same..infighting
between Hindus!! So beware, get united-- stop fighting on caste lines.

Raja Jai Chand was the traiter during Muslim rule..Hindus & their future
generations may not forgive him ?

Muslim Invaders came to India with nothing but got everything viz Land
known as Pakistan/Bangladesh out of India in the name of religion. You know
who agreed to this partition - the Congress & its leaders who declares
themselves to be secular. If they are secular then why they agreed to the
partition on communal lines? If agreed to two nations theory, why they
allowed Muslims to remain here even after partition - what a double face?

Congress used Muslims as vote bank & forced Hindus to suffer more at the
hands of their own Govt. During 50 years of their rule, Hindus' pride, dignity
nation's honor, culture & hertage further deterioted. They bankrupt this
great nation economically, culturally & morally. Hindus thought their culture
will flourish after 1947 & get back its old heritage once lost but opposit
happened . Laloo Yadav, Mullah Mulayam Singh Yadav & other communist parties etc.
started following congress footprints inorder to get votes & power. They
all started playing game of Secularism ignoring alltogether nation's pride
or dignity.

Congress, Laloo Yadav, Mullah Mulayam Yadav & other socalled secular parties are
to-day's TRAITERS.....Secularism is their weapon, distroying Hindu culture
is their motto. Actually they are the muslims in the guise of Hindus.
Hindus wake up before it is too late! Get UNITED ignoring the caste groups.
Distroy their ugly faces !! Distroy their aim !!! Enough is enough ......
Hindus suffered a lot - now no more? Revatilize your lost energy/power to fight
in order to regain lost dignity & pride of hindu culture and religion.

Hindus have been linient, non-voilent & peace loving people in the past.
Our Gods Sri Ram & Sri Krishna preached peace but they also told that these
shouldn't become the sign of cowardness. To tolerate injustice is also a crime.
Everybody must fight for the save our DHARMA. Now the time has come to
save your religion, culture & whatever "remains" of BHARAT.... it's a
DHARMA-YUDHA now. If you Hindus don't wakeup now then there will be no
to-morrow ?

Hindus do you have guts to ask your socalled Secular leaders, what's going
on with Hindus in Kashmir in the name of Secularism? So many Hindus are
butchered or raped in the name of secularism! Why Kashmiri Muslims are
silent? If they cooperate with Hindus & army, this state of affairs
shouldn't be there? Muslims can't be trusted, it's a bare fact !!

Hindus of India & worldwide, please wakeup! Start thinking about the Hindus'
Holocaust during muslim rule. Start fighting thru ballots with the
corrupted leaders of socalled secular parties.........

Long live India, Hindus & Hinduism !!!...............

Hello,

On seeing some comments that koppula velamas and polnati velamas are different being classified as BC.
First question
Who is BC?Backward class or
backward community!and on what basis?
when was first commision established?
how so called koppulavelams and polinati velamas who were considered OC in 1921 census became BC by 1970
velamas who haven't visited visakha, vijaynagram, srikakulam please dont comment !no offence as velamas here hold huge land as in other places but sadly irrigation is rain based unlike canal/godavari/krishna rivers orelse today they were as wealthy as kammas.
ok some facts now!

from indian express-
Interestingly, the commission received petitions even from Brahmins, Vysyas, Reddys, Kshatriyas, Rajputs and Velamas, who are traditionally considered to be the upper castes in the state, seeking to be treated as OBCs.During its tours to various districts, the commission receivedmemoranda from all sects of Brahmins including Vydiki, Niyogi and Sri Vaishnavas and different groups of Reddys such as Gudati, Matati and Oruganti and dominant Velama sub-castes like Koppula Velama.
http://www.indianexpress.com/ie/daily/19980823/23550254.html

If so called forward castes included in BC List by 2030 they would be callled backward caste pretty simple

northandhra classified as backward agrarian area in 1970 and communities based on agriculture are backward communities.

There was no backward class existing in velamas yes some are more rich than others and proud landlords wait for the rains or become backward with time!based on political representation, administration ,education, profession for livelihood..

And for those who dont agree -It doesn't matter.
peace

satya said...

Hello,

People from other castes dont know velamas much because velama population is not big enough even those winning in visakhapatnam are winning only due to money power not due to population wise
Most velamas dont boast unlike other castes in andhra being minority everywhere and confusion of why few are classified as BC?

and another answer to those who think sheep/cattle rearing is koppula/polinati velama profession
Its false - if it is family profession truely? then one should see somewhere the same profession existing even today!

Kammas and velamas are the same set of people-how many agree with that?

Earstwhile Karanam (now VDO)is just a crowned post in a village. Though many castes were mingled into this job basically a centuary or more was predominently held by the "Brahmina" community there by casting their colour to it. Munisiff used to be from second leftnent of village chief/rich. Though many Valamas were and are there n munisiff and karanam posts.

Dear Vamsi Jaya Krishna
This site belongs to VelamaDora. I appreciate your interest specifically on "PADMANAYAKA VELAMA DORAS ". Kindly go through the whole histary of Valamas in andhra and their origins. When we talk with in Valama for god sake please do not comparmentalise.

I would like to quote the example of Jat/ Chowdhary's in India. No matter whether they are from andhra's Kamma community or Haryana's Jat both have got brotherlyhood and both have compassion to help their "JAT" community where ever from they might be originating.

Unfortunately..we Valama's lag in this concept. take for example 1st Independent India's supreme court Chief Justisce Koka Subba Rao. The very idea of this site is to make brotherly contact with in and from all of our community....please help to flourish this community and site my dear brother......
Long Live Valama Community

some ignorant creature has written that koppula velamas are backward castes, yes we are backward castes but were pushed into backward casts in 1973 by kaasu brahmananda reddy, he has done that keeping in view the plight of farmers in that region , there even reddy's are BC's it does not make us in any way inferior and more over we never mauled poor people to gain wealth unlike our telangana counterparts , so keep ur language and in control before u shoot off. try researching before u say somethin.
